Re/Frame
Friday October 4, 2024 at 7 pm
In our sole acapella concert of the season, RE/FRAME, the singers of Variant 6 will perform virtuosic pieces for four voices that are either new adaptations or are inspired by familiar works. This program will showcase how modern composers interpret music from the past. Featuring unique pairings of a Lutheran chorale tune and Bo Holten, John Dowland and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Guillaume Dufay and Gabriel Jackson, and two works by Jonathan Woody and Joanne Metcalf inspired by the Ave Maris Stella chant. Also featured will be side by side pairings of works by William Byrd and Bruno Bettinelli, Giovanni Croce and Oliver Messiaen, and Thomas Luis Victoria and Francis Poulenc.

RE/IMAGINE showcases a classic combination - voices and organ - reaffirming its capacity to reflect virtuosity, innovation, and timelessness. Variant 6 is thrilled that frequent collaborator John Walthausen will be the organist for this stunning program, joining us on the historic organ at The First Presbyterian Church of Germantown. Featuring lesser known works from the 20th and 21st centuries that showcase the limits of virtuosity, this program will explore rarely heard works by Lili Boulanger and Francis Poulenc, English Cathedral music by Herbert Howells, and works by living composers Gabriel Jackson, Joanna Marsh, Benjamin C.S. Boyle, Thomas Lacôte, and Gregoire Rolland.

Variant 6 & Sylvan Consort of Viols present RE/CREATE, a program for six voices and six viols. The highlight of this program is a world premiere by Philadelphia composer, Kile Smith highlighting the unique sound world created by the combination of voices and viols. Smith’s new work entitled “Endless Morn of Light” features poetry of John Milton that explores ideas of timeless divinity and the power of music to elevate the soul. Paired with this new work is Orlando di Lasso’s Prophetiae Sibyllarum, a stunning and unconventional work that the two ensembles will present in different combinations of voices and viols.

HISTORIES III: RENAISSANCE

Variant 6 is thrilled to collaborate with longtime New York presenter BASS (Brooklyn Art Song Society) for the first time as an ensemble.
The revolutionary works of the Seconda pratica led to a new wave of musical expression during the Renaissance. At the forefront of this radical re-imagining of poetry and music were the madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo and Claudio Monteverdi. Hundreds of years later, the haunting poetry of 16th-century master Michelangelo inspired masterpieces by Hugo Wolf and Benjamin Britten.
